Srinagar A teenaged boy was shot dead in the outskirts of the city leading to fresh protests by people who blamed the CRPF for the killing, a charge denied by the paramilitary force.

Zahid Farooq Shah (17) was shot in the chest at Kralisangri-Brain near Nishat, 12 kms from here, and later succumbed at Soura Medical Institute, Senior Superintendent of Police (Srinagar) Riyaz Bedar said here.

Terming the killing of the boy as “unfortunate”, Bedar said “the killing of the boy is a mystery. We have registered a case to identify the culprits.” Quoting eye-witnesses, he said some boys were sitting on the roadside when an unidentified security vehicle came and fired at them.

As his body was handed over to his family, a large number of people came out of their houses and joined the protests demanding stern action against the “erring” personnel.

The CRPF, however, denied that its personnel were involved in the killing. “None of our jawans opened fire. CRPF was neither deployed nor patrolling the area at the time of the incident,” its spokesman P Tripathi said.

The killing of the boy comes at a time when the valley is on the boil since Sunday following the death of class VII student Wamik Farooq in alleged teargas shelling by police.

Senior police and civil officials have rushed to the scene to pacify the protestors.
